Treat Scars due to Acne, Injuries, or Surgery
Scars can be a source of embarassement, discomfort, and self-consciousness. Moreover, they can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation or depression, and can erode one's sense of wellbeing. Although there is no magic bullet that will completely eliminate every scar, there are a variety of treatment methods that can significantly reduce (and in some cases even completely eliminate) the appearance of scars. This page is about a particular approach to scar removal treatment using a new type of laser device. The method gets results in fewer sessions than with other types of lasers, and has a shorter recovery period after each session.
The RecoSMA device is an Erbium YAG laser that is operated at a wavelength of 2940 nm. The laser beam is split into thousands of microbeams that act on the skin in a grid-like arrangement (see photo).
Scar Removal Treatments
It has been known for many years that controlled damage to the skin stimulates not only new skin growth, but also collagen, connective tissue, and new blood vessels. This has the effect of thickening the skin, giving it increased elasticity, and repairing scar tissue, reducing its appearance. Many dermatological techniques have been developed for controlled damage to the skin. These include treatments such as microneedling and lasers. Until recently, lasers have primarily used focused light to heat and vaporise a matrix of microholes in the skin. The skin then reacts to heal the micro-wounds and to repair the scar tissue. When using this type of laser scar treatment, typically five to eight sessions are required and the recovery time after each session can be as much as a month. Moreover, the skin damage from this type of laser treatment is sensitive to the sun, which must be avoided.
The RecoSMA Technology
The RecoSMA machine is a photo-mechanical fractional laser. This new technology modifies a normal laser beam to split it into a large grid of microbeams that that effect up to 10,000 spots per square centimeter of skin.
The laser power at any point on the skin is too low to significantly heat it. Rather, due to the laser wavelength, it stimulates a small mechanical wave at each point on the skin. This wave is similar to shaking out a beach blanket. As this is done at thousands of points in a grid, the result is that some cells walls of the skin receive the cumulative wave effects, and are ruptured. The damaged cells then stimulates the body's natural healing process from the surrounding cells.
The RecoSMA technology is not a heating technique, and as such is much less painful than traditional laser skin technologies, and the method doesn't require any anaesthesia. As the skin cells are ruptured but not vaporised, recovery time is shorter than for other laser skin treatments, and after four to five days, redness completely subsides. The treatment is not sensitive to sunlight, and does not require any special aftercare. Improvements are typically visible after just a few days, and only a few sessions are needed to achieve good results.
Although RecoSMA technology can be effectively used on most patients, there are some conditions that would prevent its use. The most common cases are listed on our laser contraindications page.

The RecoSMA laser can improve many types of scars, including
- Acne scars
- Scars from injuries and surgery
- Stretch marks
- Wrinkles and crepey skin
How much does Laser Scar Removal Cost?
Whether the treatment is for post acne scarring, skin rejuvenation, stretch marks, are surgical scars, the cost of treatments using the RecoSMA laser is based on the size of the area or areas to be treated. The following table provides a guideline to pricing of scar treatments for a single session. Typically, good results require three to five sessions with intervals of several weeks between visits. The best price for scar removal can be offered when purchasing packages of treatments in advance.
